A Creative Moment to Feel the 1,200-Year History of Washi Paper Using Your Eyes and Hands

At MOTENAS JAPAN, you can learn the deep culture of “Handmade Washi” from an expert teacher. You can choose your favorite colors and textures to make your very own paper that is unique in the world.
SERVICE STRENGTH
#1. Learn history and skills deeply
#2. Warmth and comfort of handmade things
#3. Create original items with your own ideas
We want you to learn not just how to make paper, but also the history and the delicate skills of the craftspeople. You will see plant fibers floating in the water and understand the hard work of making paper by hand one by one. This helps you feel the warmth that factory-made paper doesn’t have. Also, since you can choose the colors, patterns, and sizes you like, you can use your own style to make a truly special artwork.
Experience Details
In this program, you will learn the traditional steps of Washi making and actually create your own paper by hand. We have different plans to match your needs, such as private lessons, group projects, or making interior decorations with Washi.

First, we will explain the history and ingredients of Washi. Watch the teacher’s example closely to learn how to use the tools and the key points to make beautiful paper.
Next, use a special tool called a “Suketa” (wooden frame) to scoop the fibers from the water tank. Trying to make the paper the same thickness while feeling the rhythm of the water is a special time to relax and clear your mind.

You can decorate your wet paper with pressed flowers or colored powder. Designing it while it is still soft creates a gentle look where the fibers and colors mix together naturally.
You can also try making 3D items like lampshades or make a large piece of paper together with your group. The soft light shining through the Washi creates a warm and cozy atmosphere that only handmade items can offer.
