Kintsugi is a Japanese technique where broken or chipped pottery is repaired using urushi, a natural tree sap, and decorated with gold powder. In this workshop, you will not only repair pottery, but also experience the Japanese mindset of appreciating cracks as part of the object’s scenery through your own hands. Even beginners can aim for surprisingly beautiful results while using professional tools.
Experience Details
In the Kintsugi experience plan, repair steps are carefully adjusted to match the condition of the pottery you bring. While waiting quietly for the lacquer to dry, enjoy hands-on craftsmanship as if you are having a conversation with the pottery itself.

First, carefully observe how the pottery is broken or chipped and plan how to repair it. The instructor explains the characteristics of lacquer and how to use the tools in an easy-to-understand way, so even first-time participants can start with confidence.
After cleaning the joining surfaces, the broken pieces are carefully connected using natural lacquer. The moment when the pieces fit together perfectly—like a puzzle—is truly moving. The instructor stays by your side to support you while filling small gaps.

After smoothing the joined areas, you move on to the final highlight: the Makie process. Using a brush to gently apply gold powder, the former damage dramatically transforms into a beautiful golden shine. Express a new look for the pottery through your own sense of creativity.
The finished pottery, completed by your own hands, becomes a treasured item with new value added: “I repaired this myself.” You will also receive careful guidance on how to handle it after completion. Through this experience, why not open the door to caring for objects more deeply—and to discovering a new hobby?
