An experienced Expert (職人, shokunin) will teach you carefully from how to use tools to tips, so even beginners can touch the deep world of traditional crafts with peace of mind.

SERVICE STRENGTH

#1. Authentic cutting experience touching the skills of an expert

#2. Deep learning about the meaning and history of patterns

#3.  One-of-a-kind glass to color your daily life

A big feature is not just cutting glass, but learning the meaning put into each pattern (模様, moyou) and the history continuing from the Edo period. The time spent feeling the sensation of cutting glass with a rotating blade and the beauty when light passes through it, while being taught by an expert, will be an unforgettable moving experience. A drink from a glass you made yourself will surely taste special.

Experience Details

Using a special rotating tool, you will cut the surface of colored glass called “Irokise glass (色被せガラス, irokise glass)” to draw patterns. Beautiful designs created by geometric patterns will stimulate your concentration and senses pleasantly.

The experience starts with a lecture about the history and traditional patterns of Edo Kiriko. You will learn that patterns loved for a long time, such as “Yarai (矢来, yarai)” and “Asanoha (麻の葉, asanoha),” contain wishes for protection from evil or growth.

Next, we do the process called “Waridashi (割り出し, waridashi)” to draw draft lines on the glass and decide the design. While looking at samples prepared by the expert, let’s expand your image of what patterns to carve to reflect light beautifully.

Finally, we start the work (cut) of cutting glass using a special machine. Pressing glass against a blade rotating at high speed is a nervous moment, but the expert will support you right next to you, so please work calmly.

When you wipe the finished glass with a cloth, light enters from the cut parts and shines like a jewel. You can take the finished work home on the same day, so please fully enjoy its beauty at home.
