Is it possible for foreigners to experience culture in a group?

When foreigners come to Japan in groups, it is possible for them to have a cultural experience. It is not uncommon for foreigners to travel as a family unit or as a team, and group activities are not uncommon.

The number of family members who act together can vary from one family to three generations, even including grandparents.

In the case of corporate training as part of team building, the number of participants is often 10 or more, and care must be taken when training and traveling within the country.

Foreigners will be more satisfied with cultural experiences during their visit to Japan, and it will enhance family and team bonding. Group cultural experiences can make a visit to Japan more satisfying.

Recommended cultural experiences by number of people

Recommended cultural experiences vary depending on the number of people.

From here, we will explain recommended cultural experiences by number of people. We will explain a variety of experiences, including those recommended for family units and those that can be enjoyed by large groups.

〜Five to five.

For families or other groups of five or less, the following cultural experiences are recommended.

Flower arrangement
Tea ceremony
Wagashi
Kintsugi

The reason why this traditional culture is recommended to be experienced in a small group is the conversation with the instructor.

All of these are taught and hands-on by the instructor, but each person’s progress and sensibilities are different. To accommodate these, it is best to experience them in a small group where the instructor’s attention is available.

The experience of talking with each person, enjoying the taste of the finished product, and appreciating it will be an irreplaceable time.
For small groups, something hands-on is a recommended experience.

~15 people

If you are looking for a cultural experience for less than 15 people, the following traditional cultures are recommended.

Kabuki
Samurai, Killing
Geisha, Maiko

The traditional cultures listed here are mainly for viewing, and it is preferable that there be no more than 15 people when making reservations for viewing, due to space issues.

Please note that if there are too many people, you may not be able to get a venue or a seat, or you will experience the event in pieces.

For cultural experiences and training during the dinner, please contact Motenas Japan and we will propose a plan to experience traditional culture. Please feel free to contact us.

15 or more

If there are more than 15 people, the number of traditional cultures that can be experienced will be limited.

Wadaiko
Sumo

It may come as a surprise, but taiko is a traditional culture that can be experienced by a large group of people. The satisfaction of beating many drums in unison in an ensemble is high, and bonds are strengthened. While we accept small groups, taiko is a traditional culture that can be experienced by large groups as well.

For sumo, a minimum of 20 people is defined as a group, and early application is possible. We recommend that you experience sumo wrestling if it is held during your stay.

Both are traditional cultures that can be enjoyed and amazed by the way they are experienced by a large group of people. If you want to make your visit to Japan more satisfying, taiko and sumo are two of the traditional cultures we recommend.

Points to keep in mind when foreigners experience culture

The following is a list of points to keep in mind when offering foreigners an experience of traditional culture.

In addition to the precautions to be taken when making reservations, there are also other considerations for foreigners. First, check these precautions before choosing a traditional culture.

Make a reservation in advance

Reservations are always required for group cultural experiences. In rare cases, a group of 2 or 3 people may be accepted without a reservation, but for groups of 5 or more, it is advisable to make a reservation.

Also, by making a reservation, the host will be able to prepare for the number of people.

For example, if you are going to have a tea ceremony or flower arrangement experience for 10 or more people, you will need a projector, white board, and other equipment to show them. In addition, other equipment such as fixtures, chairs, tables, and microphones may also be needed.

For these reasons of preparation, we recommend making reservations in advance if you are planning a group experience.

Take care not to increase or decrease the number of people

Once you make a reservation, make sure that the number of people does not increase or decrease. This is because reservations provide the necessary equipment and fixtures, but if the number of people decreases, they will no longer be needed.

In addition, some foreigners become ill due to the unaccustomed cold temperatures abroad, so be sure to give sufficient consideration to your physical condition. In Japan, over-the-counter medicines can be purchased at drugstores, but if your condition does not improve, it is advisable to see a medical professional.

Consideration should be given so that the number of people preparing for and attending the event does not increase or decrease.

I’ll let you know what we do.

Once you have made reservations for traditional culture, notify foreigners of what kind of experience they will have,

Informing foreigners who will participate in the experience of what they will experience will help them prepare for the experience, and also increase their curiosity by including information in advance via Youtube, etc.

You can imagine that taiko drumming makes you sweat because of the intense beating of the drums. You can prepare for this by bringing extra changes of clothes and a towel.

Foreigners who participate can also prepare, so let them know in advance what the experience will be.

List of Popular Cultural Experiences

Do you know which cultural experiences are popular among foreigners? Motenas Japan recently asked 500 foreigners to respond to a survey titled “Traditional Culture You Want to Experience in Japan. The following is an explanation of the top most popular traditional cultural experiences.

For more information on the survey, please see this article.

kabuki

Kabuki is one of the most well-known traditional Japanese cultural traditions.

Throughout its 400-year history, it has been loved by many people.
The word “kabuku” comes from “kabuku,” meaning to dress or act strangely, and even today, people are free to entertain themselves without being bound by customs and habits.
Recently, it has evolved into a traditional culture loved by people around the world, including collaborations with “Hatsune Miku” and “One Piece” under the title “Cho-Kabuki.

However, advance reservations are required for group viewing; 20 or more people are defined as a group, but please note that reservations may not be taken for popular performances. If you can experience it, kabuki is a traditional culture worthy of saying “I experienced Japan.

tea ceremony

The tea ceremony is a popular traditional culture that ranks fourth in our survey. The image of a person wearing a kimono and serving tea is probably the very image of the Japanese people.

Today it is divided into its own schools, but its source is Sen no Rikyu. The principle of hospitality to guests has not changed, and this spirit is still carried on today.

Not only can you learn how to make and drink tea, but you can also learn the spirit of hospitality, wabi and sabi, and other beautiful spiritual principles.

Motenas Japan can also offer a set plan that includes information on tea ceremony and etiquette. We can customize the plan to suit your needs, so please contact us for more information.

Japanese drum

Japanese drumming, also introduced in the Recommended Traditional Cultures section, is another popular traditional culture that ranked eighth in the survey.

If you want to experience Japanese culture as a group, taiko is the perfect choice. This is because taiko is a traditional culture that can be experienced by a large group of people all at once and can be enjoyed intuitively.

In Kumamoto, 2,778 players played taiko drums, a Guinness World Record. To be honest, you probably don’t need such a large group, but for a cultural experience for 10 or more people, taiko is the perfect choice.
